I’m just back from a ‘nature immersion’ camp in Scotland run by the Art of Mentoring crew. From our base camp at a farm near Findhorn we set off to explore the local woods and beaches. We looked for animal tracks, foraged for food, listened to the poetry of nature and played in the woods. It was glorious!
My time in the more wild places of these islands repeatedly reaffirmed the intimate connection between place and bodymind. I learnt a lot about the power of place and will draw on my experiences in future posts, but for now a couple of tasters.
Within hours of arriving I felt more alive than I have for months and my sense of vitality grew. We still don’t fully understand why spending time in nature can be so deeply healing, but it’s partly to do with the shift from a narrow to a broader awareness I outlined in my cognitive iceberg post.
My sensory awareness gradually expanded, so that I could tell where there were people in a specific part of the woods just from listening to the birds. I also experienced what we might call ‘body radar’ – an embodied knowing of someone’s location that appears not to use the conventional five senses.
It’s all too easy to live life half asleep: I invite you to wake up and hear the bird song!
